Self-build & Custom Housebuilding Register
Introduction
This Register is provided under the requirements in the Self-build and Custom Housebuilding
(Register) Regulations 2016 (available at www.legislation.gov.uk) made under the Self-build and
Custom Housebuilding Act 2015. Solihull MBC is required under the Act to keep a Register of
individuals and associations of individuals who are seeking to acquire serviced plots of land in
their area in order to build homes for those individuals to occupy (referred to as self-build and
custom housebuilding registers).
Self-build and custom housebuilding registers also provide valuable information on demand for
self-build and custom housebuilding in Solihull.
The term ‘serviced plot’ means a plot of land that has access to a public highway and has
connections for electricity, water and waste water or can be provided with those things in
specified circumstances or within a specified period.
Data Protection
Your data will be used by Solihull Council only in meeting its duties under the Self-build and
Custom Housebuilding Act 2015 and Housing and Planning Act 2016. It will also be used
to contact you about relevant opportunities for Self-build and Custom Housebuilding with
landowners, developers, land agents, housing associations or other appropriate groups that
deal with, or wish to be involved in self/custom build. Your data will not be passed on directly to

The information that the Government Regulations state must be provided for registration on the
Self-build and Custom Housebuilding Register differs for entries for individuals and associations
of individuals.
For individual entries on the register, the name and address of the individual on the register
must be recorded.
An association of individuals is defined as an association of individuals (and includes a body
corporate) that exercises functions on behalf of an association of individuals for their own selfbuild
and custom housebuilding as their sole or main residence. For entries on the register for
associations of individuals, the following information must be recorded on the register:
- the name and address of the association;
- the name and address (if different from that of the association) of the lead contact;
- the number of serviced plots of land in the relevant authority’s area the members of the association are seeking to acquire.
All entries on the register will show the date when made and any dates on which that entry has
been amended.
If you are a couple, or two or more members of one household, who are jointly seeking to
acquire a serviced plot of land to build a house to occupy as their sole or main residence,
please nominate one member of the couple or household to apply for entry on the register as an
individual. However, each individual of a household can register for a plot. If as a couple, or
members of one household, you wish to register for more than one serviced plot of land to build
a house to occupy as your sole or main residence then please make an individual entry for each
person, or register as an association.
Applicants must meet all of the eligibility criteria for entry on the register as set out by the
governments Regulations. Each individual applicant and every member of an association of
individuals that applies for entry on the register must be:
- aged 18 or older;
- a British citizen, a national of a EEA State other than the United Kingdom, or a national of Switzerland;
- seeking (either alone or with others) to acquire a serviced plot of land in the relevant authority’s area to build a house to occupy as that individual’s sole or main residence.
